» Lonavala & Khandala Twin Hill Stations ...

Lonavala Khandala Hill Station The charming twin hill-stations of Lonavala and Khandala are popular getaways from Mumbai at a distance of 100 kms away. Lonavala, 'Jewel of the Sahyadris' is just ahead of Khandala, smaller and quieter of the two. Browsing around these quaint towns feels heavenly. Well endowed with scenic natural splendors they include hills, valleys, lakes and water bodies.
Location: 622 meters above sea level and 5 kms apart from each other, these hill stations are situated in the Sahyadri ranges that demarcate the Deccan Plateau from the Konkan coast. The hill stations cover an approximate area of 38 km and are a popular destination in monsoons.

History: Present day Lonavala was a part of the Yadava Empire of yore. Later the Mughals annexed it for an extended time as a strategic territory. Subsequently the Maratha Empires took over and built remarkable forts in the region. In 1871 Lonavala and Khandala hill stations were developed by Lord Elphinstone who was then Governor of Bombay Presidency.

Sightseeing: Blessed with vales, waterfalls, vegetation and cool blustery weather, Lonavala and Khandala make you feel invigorated all over again. With lovely scenic vistas and awesome sunsets, these hill stations are not to be missed if you are in the vicinity. They come to life during the monsoon season when the terrain turns lush green with seasonal natural cascades.

Lonavala derives its name from the Sanskrit lonavli that refers to the many cave-shelters that are here. Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa caves are located close at hand. Situated in the hills these rock-cut caves belonged to 2nd century B.C. and are the oldest and finest examples of Buddhist rock-cut temple art in India.

Interesting excursions can be made to places like Rajmachi Point that overlooks Shivaji's famous fort providing stunning views of the adjacent valley. Ryewood Park is an extensive garden in Lonavala covering huge grounds full of tall trees. Valvan Dam too has a garden at its foot and is a popular evening spot, two kms from town. Tungarli Lake and dam come alive in the monsoons.
