Mahabaleshwar Hill Station Mahabaleshwar is one of the most popular hill stations close to Mumbai. Quiet lakes, hills and waterfalls make it a scenic spot attracting holiday crowds needing a change of scene. Location: The resort town lies on the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats in Maharashtra state. Located at an altitude of 1372 meters it overlooks the Krishna and Koyna valleys.

History: There is evidence of habitation in Mahabaleshwar since the early 14th century when Mogul and Hindu Kings ruled over the region. The Peshwa Kings ruled over the place till the year 1819 after which it was included in the territory of the Raja of Satara. Mahabaleshwar was developed by British rulers as a hill station and has remained a popular getaway since then.

Sightseeing: Mahabaleshwar is named after the presiding deity of the namesake temple dedicated to Lord Mahabali that is a landmark at the hill station. Popular sightseeing includes the Lingmala Waterfall, Dhobi Waterfall and Chinaman's Waterfall. Connaught Peak or the Mount Olympia and Echo Point are other places of tourist interest.

Venna Lake is a 2.5 km long body of water with boating facilities and horse riding around the periphery. Wilson point is the highest point of Mahabaleshwar and has three observation towers offering a splendid view especially at sunrise. Other points like Elphinstone Point, Babington Point, Kate's Point and Arthur's Point also offer splendid views.

Nearby Places of Interest: Mahabaleshwar has an array of exciting nearby spots that include Panchgani, Pratapgarh Fort, Tapola and Satara. Panchgani is only 19km away at an altitude of 1,334 and is considered one of the most beautiful spots surrounded by hills. Pratapgarh Fort at a distance of 24kms is the site where Shivaji won a famous battle. Tapola, 25kms away has a big lake with small islands that can be explored by boat. Satara has the Shivaji Maharaj Museum and Wasota Fort offering interesting relics from the Maratha era.

Shopping: Mahabaleshwar is famous for its cultivation of strawberries, gooseberries and raspberries and offers great jams, preserves and marmalades. The local bazaar has leather goods and tribal trinkets tourist love to carry back as souvenirs or gifts.

Pune is also the convenient railhead that will take you to Watar from where Mahabaleshwar is just 62 kms away. Also there are regular buses linking Mahabaleshwar to Mumbai and Pune.
